Haifa Museum of Art
Visitors Information
The Haifa Museum of Art is the largest and leading museum in the northern region, and one of the three largest art museums in Israel. The museum focuses on Israeli and international, modern and contemporary art, and serves as a central institution and a magnet for artists, art researchers, and culture enthusiasts. It offers its visitors a layered, diverse, and enjoyable artistic experience.
The uniqueness of the museum lies in its location—at the seam between the Hadar HaCarmel neighborhood and the Wadi Nisnas neighborhood, an area characterized by a rich demographic fabric of Jews, Muslims, and Christians. This location, alongside the rich collection, gives the museum a unique, "Haifa-esque" artistic voice, and makes it a starting point for an artistic discourse that examines both local and global issues. In recent years, prominent international artists such as Damien Hirst, Douglas Gordon, and Adrian Paci have exhibited there.
History and Building
The museum's beginnings were in 1951, established in one of the wings of the Haifa Municipality. The museum was founded on the occasion of a major exhibition showcasing the works of artist Marc Chagall. In 1977, it was moved to its current home—an impressive, historic three-story stone building spanning approximately 3,500 square meters. The building was erected in the 1920s and originally served as an Anglican school for girls, and over the years has been declared a conservation site.
The Collection and Exhibitions
The museum's collection is among the finest in Israel and includes over 9,000 works of art, reflecting various movements and trends in art. The collection includes works by leading Israeli artists such as Michael Gross, Hana Levi, Gershon Knispel, Nahum Gutman, and Reuven Rubin. Alongside these, there is a unique collection of works on paper, which constitutes about a third of the total collection. In this collection, one can find impressive works by international masters such as Marc Chagall, Francisco Goya, Pablo Picasso, Käthe Kollwitz, and Odilon Redon.
Furthermore, the Haifa Museum of Art is extensively involved in the collection and research of video art in Israel. The museum houses a diverse media archive, which includes video works by key artists from Israel and around the world, from the medium's early days in the 1960s to the present. The museum presents solo exhibitions, displays from the collection, and group exhibitions that deal with themes and trends in contemporary culture. The museum's education department works to make art accessible to the general public through interactive exhibitions for the whole family, turning the viewing of art into a fascinating and multi-sensory experience.
