Eran Shakine's works in the series "Cultural Heroes" are infused with the ambience of American Pop Art. They conduct an explicit dialogue with the works of Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Mark Rothko. The series mostly addresses plastic artists, but is also engaged with other key figures in the culture of the past century – architects, intellectuals, fashion designers, and musicians. Here we meet familiar figures such as Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Mick Jagger, Stephen Hawking, and others. Shakine's look at the iconic artists of Western culture – such as Warhol, Jean Michel Basquiat, Paul Gauguin, and others – is a sophisticated response to popular clichés regarding the elevated nature of the artistic process. These images underscore the fragility and loneliness that are the true accompaniments of the work of artistic creation.
