Car, 2005, satin cloth, 135 x 315 cm, courtesy of the artist and Dirimart Gallery, Istanbul
Ramazan Bayrakoğlu
Hundreds of small pieces of shiny satin, which are usually used for sewing linings, were cut with a stencil and sewn together with a zigzag stitch to create an image of an American vehicle. This image was borrowed from D.J. Caruso's film "Taking Lives" (2004) - a stylized psychological thriller about an unusual female FBI investigator, who specializes in creating personality profiles of serial killers. For this Turkish artist, the American car represents masculinity, authority, success and political power, and functions as a parable of the American dream and of consumer society. Its transformation by means of a "low," vernacular craft technique enhances the irony directed at the fetishistic dimension of a materialist culture, and may be read as a critique of the West.
