Izumi Kato

Born in 1969 in Shimane Prefecture. He lives in Tokyo.

When Izumi Kato paints, he eschews brushes in favour of his hands, but his sculptures are coloured using brushes. His subjects are invariably people of indeterminate age, gender and nationality, occasionally resembling foetuses or other pre-human life forms. Perhaps because of this, in his sculptures in particular, the subjects are often fused with plants (as opposed to animals). As for the interrelations of both art and individual with the outer world, Kato believes that whereas ‘sculpture is on good terms with the world from the moment it is created', ‘painting is in confrontation with the world.'
