Hiraki Sawa

Born in 1977 in Ishikawa Prefecture. He lives in London.

Sawa creates videos and video installations on such themes as time, motion, the ambiguity of everyday life, and memory. In "dwelling" (2002), tiny model aeroplanes placed on the floor and table in a room in an apartment take off and fly around, after a while the boundary between falsehood and truth becomes unclear. "elsewhere" imagines the kind of world that may well unfold when people leave their house. A recent work, "Sleeping Machine II" is part of an ongoing series titled "Figment." After witnessing the behaviour of an acquaintance who had suddenly lost his memory, Sawa began studying the faculties of memory and emotion in humans, and tried to reflect the results in his artwork. "I think perhaps I'm trying to give concrete expression to this reality which exists within arm's reach but which is somehow ambiguous," says Sawa. "Or perhaps I'm simply making this ambiguous reality even more ambiguous in an attempt to express a reality that may be visible."
