Toshio Shibata

Born in 1949 in Tokyo. He lives in Tokyo.

Toshio Shibata's large-format, technically perfect photographs show imposing landscapes, in which the dominant theme is man's attempt to subjugate the natural world. At the same time, his gigantic bridges, dams, water sluices, concrete tunnels, artificial waterfalls and other structures, built by man to control nature, appear as natural an element of the landscape as the surrounding mountains, rivers, forests and seas, and there is no sense of conflict. Shibata strives to remove any sense of temporal or geographical specificity - he is interested in the feeling of eternity, which, he says, is inherent in nature and which the human structures in these pictures imitate.
