Yayoi Kusama

Born in 1929 in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture. She lives in Tokyo.

In recent years, Kusama has produced a large number of installations. The piece in this exhibition is one example, consisting of an everyday interior with furniture covered completely in polka dots, each measuring about 2cm across. The viewer is enveloped in the countless dots, which stand out under black light, and find themselves vacillating endlessly between the existential feeling that they are present and the feeling that they are on the verge of melting into the space and becoming ‘nothing'. Herein lies the ‘self-obliteration' which is an ongoing theme of Kusama's artwork.
